Hello,
Been using DNN for awhile as a way to not fall asleep at work, so by no means is this a major issue.  One thing I've always come upon in every install that I've done, is the following:

IIS is set to a ALL UNASSIGNED - when you browse to the website via http://1.1.1.1 , the broswer changes to http://localhost.
IIS is set to the actual (internal) IP of the NIC.  Internal browsing is perfect, however since its behind a NAT device, when I'm inside the network connecting to the public IP i have forwarded to my web box, the browser bar changes to its internal IP - and all is good since it can route.  However when I'm on the public side, since it cant route - it fails.

Easiest, fastest way to fix?  Why does it do this?

You need to add a PORTAL ALIAS, you can do this by logging in as HOST. Then go to the Admin/Site Settings page and add the Alias you want to use to access the site, 1.1.1.1, or whatever the outside IP address is
