My site is slow to load. Once it is downloaded it works fine. What could be causing the initial lag? Server? Skin design?. I upgraded this week on advice from the hosting company. My site is not that big and it is in development.  The upgrade did not make much of a difference to the speed.

DNN version 5.01. I tried to install the newest release, but it did not work and I had to reinstall 5.01.

There are a variety of things that are likely contributing to your site being slow.  First and foremost, you definitely need to find a way to upgrade to version 05.05.00. 

Next, you should take a look at the DotNetNuke Performance Best Practices Guide, by Mitchel Sellers.

You might also be suffering from one of the tables being to large.  Mitchel has a great blog post about this too.

A module that definitely helps with performance in DNN is the Snapsis PageBlaster module.  Also, you can review this great forum thread about the performance settings.

Finally, you are also on the right track in thinking that your skin might be contributing to the site's performance.  You can use tools like YSlow to help you determine any bottle necks in the page load time.
