New to DNN and have a question I was not able to find the answer to (may have missed it here).

Basically the requirement I have is to convert documents to PDF before being downloaded.  There may be a need to do other things to a file before it is downloaded to the user.  I have figured out how to do the download by adding headers and ending the response but I cannot figure out how to extract the file so I can modify it before it is downloaded.

Here is a sample URL that is being generated.

http://server/m/mdx/tabid/1979/default.aspx?entryid=3027&Command=Core_Download&Method=attachment

I am sure there is just something simple I am missing.  One option I was looking at was a module that will do the conversion for me but there may be other things that I need to do to the file.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

you will need 3rd party components, which are able to generate PDF from your content. Unfortunately, I am not aware of any, but check out www.snowcovered.com.

I was planning to use the Office VSTO tools to do the conversion. The problem I am trying to address now is how to get the document out of the repository and put it on the local hard drive and the conversion (or other changes to the file). I can then start the download based on that new file by adding the proper headers.

I have looked at the GetFile or GetDocument function and I am not sure how to get all of the information they are asking for (FileID, FolderID, FileName, etc). I looked at the DMX_Entries and Files tables and found some of the information but am still not clear how to get the right information or if I am even looking at the right functions.

Thanks,
Scott Harris

I am not quite sure, whether installing office on the server is a clever idea (and it might be not easy to stick to the license conditions). there are a number of server components you may use in a custom module to convert doc to pdf (http://www.bing.com/search?setmkt=en-US&q=server+convert+doc+to+pdf)

Thanks for the link to the items.

It is my understanding that use of VSTO tools are free to use and can be installed on the server (see this article http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/vsto/dd253198.aspx). I am also double checking this with some of my friends at Microsoft to be sure.

I looked over the some of the suggestions you made and looked for again some others and it does not appear that none of the items I found will do what is needed. The customer already has a system in place that generates links to documents that need to be converted. If there is some tool that can intercept the URL and do the conversion and do the download automatically that would be good. If not, I am back to extracting the file from the system and doing the conversion on my own.

Getting the files out of the system (behind the scenes) is the part I cannot seem to get a handle on.
