Is there any specific reason not to redirect error to the ErrorPage.aspx that already is available in DotNetNuke instead of creating a new custom one (as mentioned in the official DNN description on how to prevent this security issue)?

ErrorPage.aspx does not prevent information disclosure, as required.

actually the existing errorpage does, as the oracle padding attack requires the http status. I would (for now) use the Microsoft suggested page as it contains a timing loop which defeats that potential side-channel attack. The updated version in 5.5.1 contains a similar loop.
