Yehuda, optimization always has a specific situation in mind - if you can't control it, it may behave different than you assumed. The only option is controlling the server frequently when it is in production.

I agree, Sebastian, but I must have a general policy to work with and then fine tune it to each site I host. Having 20 sites to manage is not a problem in this aspect. Since my hosting is kind of a boutique hosting (It aims only to clients that need special care and not for all) I am aware of their special needs and can manage it.
Mitchell’s document is a great resource for this purpose since it gives the initial knowledge for someone like.
