We are setting up a DNN portal for a customer and will be using Axon for email management.  Their Exchange 2007 server is also hosted internally but managed by a different company.  The other company has setup an Exchange account for us to send email.

We have gone to their login page https://webmail.CompanyName.com but for the username it forces us to put in CompanyName\Username.  We cannot login using the email account name CustomerService@CompanyName.com

When we configure our smtp settings in DNN we are pointing to the webmail address and entering the CompanyName\Username but this fails.

Should this work from DNN?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

the mailserver needs to implement SMTP standard, AFAIK this is not enabled in Exchange 2007 by default.

You want to point to the smtp address for the exchange server. In most cases this would be the primary address of the exchange server, it might even be the same as the webmail address. We have used DNN with Exchange just fine, you just need to make sure you have the proper settings. You will also want to use the format of "DomainName\username". If that isn't working you need to check with the exchange administrator to a) make sure SMTP is configured, b) you have permission to access the smtp server, c) Make sure smtp relay is allowed for the web server.

We have gotten to the point where we are authenticating against the Exchange 2007 server from DNN.  We can email internal addresses without any problems.

However, we cannot email anyone outside of the Exchange server.

At this point, I am assuming that there is a relay issue on the Exchange server and from some research, enabling anonymous access seems like the fix, which seems odd.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

That is definitely a relay issue.  Hard to give an exact answer without knowing the network environment.  You can use anonymous access, just make sure SMTP is locked down for only access within the network.  You might also try removing anonymous and allowing relay by IP Address (webserver) or even the account being used to access the exchange server.
