Thanks Will, We have been messing with the settings on the Exchange Server, but we still can't get through. They set it up so that we have the same exact settings as a Scanner/Copier on the network. It sends out into email form successfully, yet we cannot get outside.

I'm experiencing the same problem.
When I looked into the message properties of the status message send by DNN I found that the message was send by Anonymous - seems that DNN isn't sending the correct login info to the server. I have tried some other SMTP Relay Server but all that I get in return is a EventLog entry with the error 5.7.1. (not allowed to relay). The tech. support of my ISP said that I have to use TLS security for authentication but there is only SSL.
Help is very much appreciated as I need to use Verified registration to my site.

Well, after a lot of googleing and messing with various settings on Exchange Server 2010 I finally got out of the Exchange server domain.

I disabled TLS security on the receive connector and the mails start flowing.

It would be a good thing if DNN would support TLS security mechanism - having to disable it on the Exchange Server represents a security risk.
