Me too! I'm doing a pet shelter website (not yet live) and want to display 6 pages:

  1. Welcome menu
  2. News Headlines
  3. Adoptable Cat photos (with previous/next buttons)
  4. Adoptable Dog photos (with previous/next buttons)
  5. Lost animal photos (with previous/next buttons)
  6. Found animal photos (with previous/next buttons)

I'm still working on the base site, so doubt I'd get to this very fast, but will check back periodically.

Hadar:

Since you did not mention it, I don't know if you are aware that DNN had the functionality to detect mobile devices and render content accordingly to mobile browsers utilizing the .Net built in ability to detect the kind of device (and browser) and adapt the content to it. I am now dating myself (in DNN years) but this was last available in version 1.0.10e I believe. The core team decided to remove this functionality and add it back in to the core "later".

I still say that it would be extremely cool to be able to tell the customers that we can build them a very cool and robust site with built it functionality for mobile devices, specially now with the proliferation of very powerful and connected phones and PDAs. This is true for both Intranet and external sites.

I vote for the Core Team to reintroduce the support for mobile devices again. But since I know that it could be a pain to adapt the modules, skins, etc. I settle for the basic functionality in the DNN Core to detect the user device and redirect them to a mobile application of my choosing, since I can develop custom mobile apps with .Net.

In any case, if you have a mobile device you can point it to my site, www.almacigo.com, the mobile functionality is somewhat simplistic but it works.

Let me know if you would like to play with DNN 1.0.10e and cannot find it for download, I still have the package for it.

I am experimenting with using a complete CSS-based skin and layout instead of using tables, and this gets me a long way toward making my pages mobile-friendly automatically. However, DNN really needs the following core changes IMHO:

  • XHTML 1.0 compliant markup as opposed to the HTML 4 markup that doesn't come close to validating.  XHTML standards are crucial for a host of reasons, yet most or all of the modules I'm using use tables for layout even though my skin does not. Also, the tags should follow XHTML standards.
  • The ability (as stated above) to detect browser version and/or client platform (e.g. in this case PocketPCs and the like) and to serve up a different CSS file for each.  This would allow for mobile-friendly pages that would also degrade gracefully in old non-CSS browsers or even with images turned off.

If we truly want to seperate structure/markup from presentation, we are going to have to go with these standards ASAP.  The argument that it will leave a lot of users behind is bunk because well done XHTML+CSS designs degrade very gracefully. AND, they can be ADA complient for text readers and folks who need text enlarged.  I believe these standards would make an already fantastic DNN application awesome and more usable.

This has already been brought up a number of times.

Do you mean like a photo album where mobile users can actually upload photos?
I know You-Tube will actually let you upload videos from a mobile phone, so it seems that DNN should get there one of these days...

Personally, I would like to add an "Events" module that works with mobile applications.
