Hi there,

After years working with dnn this I can't explain and solve.

I mostly build dnn sites on my local machine and when satisfied I upload them, backup the sql2008 dbase and upload that one as well. Adjust web.config for the remote server and voila.
But now working on sites localy (localhost) goes well for a few weeks, all blistering fast as it is localhost and suddenly ..... It takes a few cups of coffee to login to the local website.
I tried everything : all browsers, fresh installation of a new portal with handmade dbase in sql management studio, clean standard install of dnn 5.5.1. I also reinstalled IIS (windows 7 ultimate x64) and even reinstalled sql2008 express R2.
What's left is a system backup Image ofa month ago and yes everything works fine again.
But that's not normal, why does suddenly IIS or MSSql2008R2 quit working normally ???
haven't installed any programs, it a production machine.

Does anybody have any clue?? Or does anybody have the same issue???
Or am I alone in this (in the dark)

I would deffenetly like to hear.

With greetings,
Hans Beekman

Hi Hans, im not sure what the problem would be , the description would suggest a new program or update to existing one (e.g. servicepack, monthly security patch). Have you checked the machine event viewer to see if any notes are in there i.e. the windows log appliction log might show timeouts/crashes in running processes etc.

Have you checked all of your logs, including your IIS logs for the site? Look at the request it makes last when it hangs. Another option would be to install Visual Studio temporarily on the production machine(if you can) and step through the load to see where it hangs.

What windows updates have been applied?

Has any other software been automatically updated?

Thank you,

Hi Cathal and James, Nice to see that after many years you still get a fast answer from colleagues in the field. Reminds me to not only look for questions but also help with answers while I'm working with dnn from 2004 up. In answer to your suggestions: I tried everything but one thing I didn't think off and my Dutch fellow developer Timo breumelhof did. It is as silly as a bad working "Online Shield" of AVG Anti-Virus. It really stops your browser from doing anything in case of extensive java script handling. After uninstalling AVG and reinstalling Norman antivirus (to have something) all my problems where gone: I could edit pages again !!! Ohh what a relieve: Thanx Timo for your post! So to all you folks that have AVG Anti-Virus installed : Be aware if your localhost pages aren't loading anymore. Thanks for your reply's Greetings, Hans Beekman

glad to hear you've got it resolved. BTW I recommend microsoft security essentials, i've found it to work well (and it's free).
