Hello,

I'm new to the DOTNETNUKE Community. I recently signed on with IX webhosting with the intention of creating a site with DNN 5. Due to my inexperience, I didn't realize IX webhosting is limited to DNN version 4.07 because of their servers. They currently cannot accept 5 and no timeframe is specified. Ideally, I'd like to have the latest version, but is version 4 that outdated that it would ill-advised to pursue designing a website? Finally, will it continue to be patched should a security issue arise? I apologize for such rookie question. I appreciate any insight you could provide.

Thank you

There are several critical rated security issues with 4.7; if you are forced to use 4.x then 4.9.5 is the most secure. I recommend using a different host if they cannot support 5.5.1, be aware that the requirement for 5.5.1 is .net 3.5 and sql 2005, if they support these then it will work, they are probably saying this because 4.7 is what they offer through an auto install.

I agree, it should be easy for you upgrading 4.7 to 4.9.5 (the most stable version atm), you just need to overwrite the files with the ones from the upgrade package.

There is a critical Microsoft .Net bug that affects all .Net applications that you need to be aware of and verify that a hosting provider has implemented.
To mitigate all the security issues you really should be starting out with 5.5.1 for your site as it has built in support for ASP.NET v4.0.
I would highly recommend you find a Hosting Provider that has implemented the Microsoft .NET bug fix on their servers AND that has a roadmap for moving up to ASP.NET V4.0 within the next 3 to 6 months.

Ken, DNN 5.5.1 includes a workaround which doesn't fix the .Net vulnerability (and will be rolled back in 5.6.0 AFAIK), i.e. 5.5.1 is NOT more secure than previous version and there are NO critical bugs in DNN 4.9.5. Of course, any hosting server should have applied all Microsoft Windows security patches (same applies to SQL server) and security best practices.
