I have DotNetNuke set up in a subdomain and want to create a new parent portal on a different domain.  How do i do this on a shared server?

I have an account w/ a hosting company (Arvixe.com).  I created my first DNN portal in a subdomain (like dnn.OneDomain.com).  That works fine.  I put dnn.OneDomain.com or www.dnn.OneDomain.com in my browser & it goes to my DNN portal.  Arvixe's file manager indicates that those files are in my account's /home/dnn.OneDomain.com/wwwroot/Portals/0.

I'd like to create a second parent portal (AnotherDomain.com), but cannot figure out how.  I registered the second domain name & had it point to Arvixe's name server.  I created a website for the second domain using Arvixe's system, so it created a file directory for me with some very basic files.  I put AnotherDomain.com in my browser & I see something like "We're working on setting up a site here".  Those files are in /home/AnotherDomain.com/wwwroot.

Next, I logged onto DNN in dnn.OneDomain.com and told it to create a parent portal at AnotherDomain.com.  I took the default for the Home Directory, so it created files in /home/dnn.OneDomain.com/wwwroot/Portals/1.  (I tried to change it to ../../logosgal.com/[PortalID], but got a message saying that's invalid).

Now, when I put AnotherDomain.com in my browser, I still see the "We're working on setting up a site here" message, not my DNN portal.

So, how do I get AnotherDomain.com to go to my second DNN portal?  I don't see any options in either DNN or Arvixe's system that looks like it will let me do this.  Do I need to ask Arvixe's tech support to do something (they've been very helpful)?Do I need to install DNN in AnotherDomain.com?

Any help with this would be much appreciated!

The proper way to go about this is:
  • register the domain name
  • point the ip address of the proper a record(s) to the server your other site is running on
  • add the new domain name in the host header of the existing website on the web server
  • create the new portal in DotNetNuke

Having said that: not all hosting companies support this, for instance because they use control panels that do not support this. If you use a control panel like Plesk or Helm, the normal method to get this to work is to create an alias domain of the original domain. The downside of this is that you will not be able to have seperate email for the alias domain (because the DNS is an exact copy of the main domain)

Erik, Thanks for your reply! Unfortunately, I have not been able to figure out how to create an alias domain. Is that something I do in DNN? Through my domain name registrar? Through my hosting company (in the control panel? ask tech support?)? Alternatively, might I be able get my registrar or hosting company's tech support people to do some or all of the steps you listed in the first part of your answer? Which company would need to do which part(s)? Also, I'm not sure what you're saying about email. Would we be able to have addresses@dnn.OneDomain.com & addresses@AnotherDomain.com. Only one or the other? Neither? I'm sorry to be asking such ignorant questions. I'm a C programmer trying to learn .NET, web development, DNN, etc., etc., not a web server expert.

I happened to find this very helpful item in the wiki: http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Resources/Wiki/tabid/1409/Page/Hosting-Multiple-Sites-on-a-Single-Instance-of-DotNetNuke/Default.aspx With those details, I contacted tech support @ Arvixe & got them to make the changes to the host header. So, now it is working as I was hoping. Arvixe Tech Support said that the only way to for me to get this done is to have them do it.
