I think I found a bug in 5.6 -- if you do a clean install i can reproduce this - not sure if it works on an upgrade

here are the steps
1. clean install
2. log in as host
3. click the host menu item (where the Console module is for Host pages)
4. click settings for this page
5. uncheck remove from menu
6. save the settings
7. now click on the host in the upper right above the control panel

No sub pages show up - in the control panel go to the host tab and look at the extensions - you will not be able to 'Create New Extension'

Essentially removing the host tab from the menu seems to make all its sub items think they are admin items?
Not sure this is about as far as i got -

Workaround: DO NOT remove the Main Host tab from the menu!!!! (At least for now)

Okay i found a small workaround

After returning the host page to the menu go into the database and change PortalID in the Tabs to null - it seems the update for the page settings sets it to 0

restart the application after setting the portalid to NULL

there is a known Showstopper for Host menu pages, which does not properly populate parent page and results in assigning current portal ID. For all child pages of host you may workaround by selecting parent page before saving the page, for Host page you have to fix portal ID in the database. This should be fixed in DNN 5.6.1
