Hi,

I recently upgraded a community version of DNN to 5.6.. All went aok upgrade wise, but when I go to my default Domain Name eg www.bizsoft.com.au I get an error everytime..
However, if I go to www.bizsoft.com.au\default.aspx all is aok..

The Event Viewer is saying this:

DotNetNuke.Services.Exceptions.PageLoadException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object. ---> System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object. at DotNetNuke.Entities.Portals.PortalSettings..ctor(Int32 tabID, PortalAliasInfo objPortalAliasInfo) at DotNetNuke.HttpModules.UrlRewriteModule.OnBeginRequest(Object s, EventArgs e) at System.Web.HttpApplication.SyncEventExecutionStep.System.Web.HttpApplication.IExecutionStep.Execute() at System.Web.HttpApplication.ExecuteStep(IExecutionStep step, Boolean& completedSynchronously) --- End of inner exception stack trace ---

I am also having this exact same issue after upgrading from DNN 5.5.1 to 5.6, however when i hit the main site page (www.website.com) , I don't have anything recorded in the event viewer and instead see this error message only:

DotNetNukeError
Windows Server 2003

Along with a "Return to Site" button.

That's the same behavior/error which has been reported several times in the forums both following upgrade and new installation of DotNetNuke 05.06.00. It appears to be releated to the automatic addition of portal aliases introduced in this version. I have been trying to track down its cause but have yet to be able to reproduce it on a localhost install so I can step through what is happening. Please answer the following:

1. Is site's application pool running under ASP.Net 4.0 ?

2. What is the web server's IIS version?

3. Are the website's bindings using a non-standard Http port (i.e. not default 80)? If so, is the UsePortNumber node in the appSettings section of web.config a) commented out, b) Set to True or c) Set to False?

4. Are some or all png image files in the site's skin or in use elsewhere on the site showing missing image icons or errors?

5. If you can log-in as host user, please check the Admin-->Site Settings Portal Alias listing or look at the PortalAlias table in the database to see if it contains any new entries - all containing references to png image files. If so, do these entries reappear after they are manually deleted and the site is again visited?

6. Do you recall how you first hit the site to trigger the upgrade or install - a) Site url without "/default.aspx" at end, b) Site url with "/default.aspx" at end, c) Site url with "/Install/Install.aspx?mode=upgrade" or "/Install/Install.aspx?mode=install" at end?

7. In the sites IIS configuration, are any image file extensions (particularly .png) mapped through the ASP.Net (ISAPI) handlers?

1. Is site's application pool running under ASP.Net 4.0 ? NO

2. What is the web server's IIS version? 2008 Server R2 64bit - IIS 7.5

3. Are the website's bindings using a non-standard Http port (i.e. not default 80)? If so, is the UsePortNumber node in the appSettings section of web.config a) commented out, b) Set to True or c) Set to False? A
4. Are some or all png image files in the site's skin or in use elsewhere on the site showing missing image icons or errors? Yes

5. If you can log-in as host user, please check the Admin-->Site Settings Portal Alias listing or look at the PortalAlias table in the database to see if it contains any new entries - all containing references to png image files. If so, do these entries reappear after they are manually deleted and the site is again visited? There are no new/additional alias's in the DB.

7. In the sites IIS configuration, are any image file extensions (particularly .png) mapped through the ASP.Net (ISAPI) handlers? Initially ISAPI handlers where being used. They where removed and an IISReset done, but no change in the issue.
PS- Changing the URLRewite to use iFinity's cleared the issue.
