The standard permissions that are available via module Settings allow for "View" or "Edit" to be set for individuals or groups.  Depending on the nature of the module, this can be too granular.

Is it possible in DNN to set more specific permissions for modules to allow access to administrative module functionality but not  the module configuration itself?

For instance, I want to implement a Gallery module whereby I have a user group called, say, GalleryAdmin that can upload media to the gallery but they cannot alter the Settings for the module?

Thanks,
Paul

Is it the DNN Gallery Module and if yes what version? If you talk about the DNN Gallery module please ask this to the Extensions forums of the Gallery.

Basicly it is possible to add module permissions on developing a module but they must also be hard coded and you have to refer to the added functions and check in the code behind if this permission is set for the user.

Those types of permission settings are generally built into the module, and would not be a feature of the DNN Community edition.
Using your Gallery example, there are many options including Simple Gallery, Media Gallery, Gallery Server, Ultra Media Gallery, etc, etc... and each one has it's own methods of implementing security.

Mark, I know that many modules use their own schemes for security - although there is an extensible security system in the core, which may be added custom permissions (see Form and List) or permissions for objects inside the module (see Forums). By definition, module edit permissions do not include access to module settings - this is a known issue in DNN 5.6.0 and will hopefully be fixed in 5.6.1

Thank you for responding, Matthias.  I have been looking at the DNN Gallery Module (version 04.03.00) but I am not specifically interested in this as it is still in beta.

I am new to DNN, not a developer and I have limited exposure to module functionality.  My post was more general to get a better understanding of the boundaries between standard DNN and development (re permissions) with the view to writing specifications for development rather that developing myself.

The second part of your response gives me a better idea on this as well as the later response from Mark ODonnell.  Thank you for your help.
