The Portals and aspnet_Membership tables which Sebastian referenced in his steps to regaining access for the host user MUST be present. The name of the Portals table might be prefixed by an objectQualifier such as "DNN_".

Here's another way to gain access by elevating a "normal" user to SuperUser with host account permissions:

1. Register on the site as a new user.
2. Open the site's database with a tool such as Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio and locate and open the Users table for editing. The table name might be prefixed by an objectQualifier such as "DNN_" (but NOT "aspnet_"
3. Find the row in the Users table for the new user that you just registered. It should be the last row of the table.
4. In the column "IsSuperUser" for that row, change False to True.
5. Click in the row above to save the change.
6. Now try to log in as the new user which should now have host permissions.

NOTE: If registration has been turned off or set to private you will have to first modify the value for UserRegistration as Sebastian indicated in the first part of his instructions.

Rather than going through the above steps, are you sure that you (or your hosting provider) does not have a backup of the site or at least the web.config file taken BEFORE the upgrade. Without being able to restore the original values for the <machineKey> section of web.config, you will still need to reset the passwords of all users once you gain access to the site.

Bill is generally correct in the alternative method to create a host user, however, this account has some anomalies, which might lead into problems on future upgrades.
