The bug is in codeplex (including a comment with the solution). It is #17933. I think the bug is not actually worded precisely, but whatever.

By the way, if the application is looking for the images in the wrong place, then you might as well put ccopies of those images in the wrong place. I went to my child folder (which typically has only a Default.aspx file) and created under that folder the following folder: DesktopModules/Blog/ShareBadge/images. Then I created a copy of all images under the correct ShareBadge/images directory in this new one. My child portal now displays the images correctly.
