Hi,

Is there a inherent way to prevent prospective members of a DNN site from registering when attempting to use a duplicate username? Or does it require a third-party module??

Thanks,

Will

As far as I know, the standard DNN authentication provider won't allow a duplicate username.  As a matter of fact, DNN uses a single set of usernames for all portals within an installation (a good thing or bad thing depending on your needs).  The registration form should throw an error during registration saying that the username is unavailable and prompt for a different username.

Then how come I found 116 duplicate usernames today. A script written by the guys at Active Social found them and renamed them for me. I just want to prevent it from happening again.

My apologies! I confused the username with Display Names! My bad!!!

A display name may be created manually by the user or automatically, e.g. by combining [FirstName] + ' ' + [LastName]. In this case, a unique displayname would prevent registration of two users with the same firstname and last name. Besides, you might want to require unique email addresses by using a membership option in your web.config file.
