I did next:
  1. Overwrite the desktopmodules/admin/portal/portal.template.xsd
  2. export an existing template
  3. create portal with this template.

Yes. I think the new export did the job and the template was already there. Not sure of that. But using the website template which is present from the update/install package of the core did not work either. I think it needs an update on the core package. I am however wondering why the default dnn installation on a new installation works however.

Sebastian, I realize this is an ancient thread, however it's the only one I can find for an identical issue I have with an upgraded site (now 6.2.3)

I discovered i could no longer create a new parent site from a newly exported template. I can however create a new site from the 'blank' DNN template.

HOWEVER, after making a template from this NEW BLANK site, it can no longer reproduce itself... in other words, I get the same exact error as with any other template I create after the EXPORT AS TEMPLATE process.

"newblanktemplate.template is not a valid Site Template File.

Validation Results
The element 'tab' has invalid child element 'content'. List of possible elements expected: 'containersrc, Terms, startdate, skinsrc, permanentredirect, issecure, keywords, KeyID, name, description, iconfile, disabled, title, refreshinterval, defaultLanguageTab, url, tabpermissions, pageheadtext, panes, tabsettings, moduleID, iconfilelarge, sitemappriority, cultureCode, visible, tabtype, enddate, parent'.

I've replaced all the template.xsd, etc files from a NEW installation file set (6.2.3) and still get nowhere.

This is a complete show stopper for us on production!

Ideas?

Daniel,
It looks like the import is unable to interprete one of the newer tab properties called "content" (used for Taxonomy). this needs to be solved in DNN core framework, please make sure, it is logged at support.dotnetnuke.com. As a workaround you may edit the template xml file and remove all content child nodes of tab nodes.
