I created a site with DNN several years ago and began working with DNN again this weekend. I am setting up a social web-based site for an online video game for my first project and I've used the Manage Profile Properties to add fields for registration and remove unwanted profile fields. I've been able to put together an initial site with many features in just a few days and I'm very impressed with what DNN has to offer. I am also very pleased with what you can do with the registration process with one exception. It appears that there are six permanently required fields. My searches of the forums and Bing/Google so far seem to confirm that there is no way to not require these six fields or modify what the six fields are.

Hopefully I've missed something and there is a way to turn off or render the Firstname & Lastname fields invisible. There has been growing concern in the U.S. about entering personal information online because of a number of serious incidents involving harassment, stalking, identity theft, and child predators. In the case of the site I'm developing it will be a free site with no charges and no reason anyone needs to know the users' real life names. People are being advised to give as little personal information as possible and schools are advising parents not to let their children use sites that require real life names. Now I'm wondering if I should actually take the site live if there is no way to not require users first & last names.

I'm hoping someone can tell me a solution to this. Thanks in advance for any advice that is offered.

If you want to customize the registration form and more particularly remove username, lastname, firstname and/or display name, you have to use a 3rd part module like our module Simple Signin.

Thanks for the reply. That looks like an option. I'll talk with the people who will be using the site to see what they want to do. In the meantime, I've created a custom registration page using the core registration module. I posted a warning on that page advising that the fields can't be turned off but that they should fill the fields with Jane or John Doe and not their real names. I'll let them decide.
