Hi all

Yesterday I posted a problem I was having with ADO Entity Data Source. I've since found that maybe the problem is a little deeper than I thought.

I was trying to make my first bespoke module (a very simple one) and using the tutorial at http://www.adefwebserver.com/DotNetNukeHELP/DNN5_HelloWorld/DNN5HelloWorld2.htm as a framework. Now I'm fairly sure that I got that working on Sunday. As I was still having problems yesterday I figured that going back to square one was a good plan and went through the tutorial again. This time it barfed. Twenty-four hours of trying to trace back has me mystified.

If I create (in VS 2010) a new project, copy the DNN database into the App_Data folder, set up a connection, add a LinqToSQL class and drop a table on it, all is well. If I use DNN as the project, I add a LinqToSQL class, drop a table from the existing connection, again all is well - so far.

In the 'my project', I then add a Web User Control, put a LinqDataSource on the page, open the configure connection, and I have a value in the dropbox if I select to show only Data Contexts. If I do the same thing in DNN, I have no Data Contexts if I select 'show only, but the Context Object is available in the dropbox. If I select it, accept the table offered and carry on through all appears well, until I try and build when it barfs with 'EntityTypeName' is not a member of 'System.Web.UI.WebControls.LinqDataSource'. I've added references to about everything I can think of, and it still doesn't work.

It's a clean install of DNN (about the thirtieth in the last 24 hours) and I don't think I've done anything to the SQL Server or VS setups since I had it working on Sunday. I'm much confused after chasing my tail for hours over something that's still on the nursery slopes of the learning curve. :)

As always, any pointers will be most gratefully accepted.

Cheers

Ian

Hi all

Apologies for following-up to my own post. I *may* have a bit of a clue as to what I'm doing wrong and maybe someone would like to comment.

Following the instructions on http://www.adefwebserver.com/DotNetNukeHELP/DNN5_HelloWorld/DNN5HelloWorld2.htm I get down to the bit about creating a new connection to the database. I point the wizard at the DNN database file in App_Data, as it seems to tell me, and I can't create the connection because the default connection exists and the database is busy.

I realise that this probably *should* work as instructed and that I'm doing something daft, but I can't see what. Can anyone please tell me what I'm doing wrong, as I'm guessing that my problems with LinqToSQL and ADO come from not having the right connection somewhere.

Many thanks

Ian
