Hi all

VS2010 with inbuilt server, DNN 5.06.00

After spending a week trying every module creation tutorial I can find (unsuccessfully :() I've been playing around with the DNN Compiled Module option in VS. Create a new one, go into Properties, empty the root textbox, set the .NET version, remove the DNN reference and add the new one. Bingo!

But what goes in the Assembly textbox? I've seen all sorts of conflicting advice, and too many to to even try and enumerate here. And what do I do with the YourCompany bits? Am I supposed to go through all the files and change them? If so, am I supposed to change the folder name in the DNN DesktopModules folder? As I've said, I've tried all sorts of things. as everyone else seems to have no problem at all, I'm obviously missing a clue. But then the term 'information overload' comes into play.

Heck, I only want to create a simple, one-off module with a few textboxes and dropboxes and hook it all to a couple of tables. I've got all the physical, page stuff done, I just can't plug it in until I get the first step working. :)

As always, many thanks in advance for any free clues.

Cheers

Ian

Hi Chris

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I watched it this afternoon after discovering your blog on the subject. My problem with it is that I'm not running IIS. I've only got Vista Home so I'm having to use the VS server. I did *try* your example, just in case I could get away with it, but it wouldn't let me.

Cheers

Ah sorry Ian, I missed that you were trying to run internally. Unfortunately you will likely have to fire up the local web server manually to get things working. You might also check out the WebMatrix stuff that Microsoft released this week, I believe that has a web server included, but I haven't done any testing with that yet.

Hi Chris

I don't especially need another web server, I just need to find somewhere that lists the instructions on what to put where when using the VS Compiled Module template. I realise that no one else seems to be having too much trouble with it (unless no one else is using it :)) but I find all this extraneous YourCompany stuff extremely confusing. There's http://www.sipidcode.com/post/%28VB%29-DNN-5-module-development-tutorial-part-2-Setting-up-the-project.aspx which says to put 'sipidcode.modules.products' there. But that, to me implies that the project is named sipidcode. Ok, but it doesn't say what to put in place of YourCompany. Others don't say anything, another one said to do a global find & replace on YourCompany, which screwed all sorts of things into the ground. :) I just can't find any definitive answer.

I've tried getting the basis of a module off the ground all sorts of ways over the last several days and hit a snag whichever way I've turned. A lot of the stuff is for DNN4 or VS2008 so I try and work around it. Where there is something reasonable, then I@ve hit a snag with database connections, I think, as in my other post out today, 'Back again', in the New to DotNetNuke group.

I've got the inner code of what I want to do working. I've run it up in VS as a web page. I can run, skip and jump but can't do the baby steps. :)

Cheers

Ian
