Is there anyway, on the same server, to set up a test installation and then back up and restore between the two? I know that i can set up a copy of my production installation on my local machine, but I'd like to see if it is possible to set up a QA copy on my single, dedicated production server.

yes, that's perfectly fine, it's the same process i.e. make sure your site has portal alias's for both the production url and the test url , and do a full file and database backup, create a new database for the test and restore the backedup database over it (ensure you mark the "force restore" option and recreate the users. finally update your test website connectionstrings to point to the new test database.

This works well and many people do such a thing - however the only are you need to be careful of is when you make any changes to your site that are not stored in the database ... if you are running two separate instances of dnn you will need to employ a mechanism  to get the folder sets in sync as well.

Having said the above ...

Of more concern however - is that such a mechanism does not work if your LIVE site allows users to register, the operation of forums or blogs or any other modules that update the database dynamically.

Because you would obviously be wiping any such changes that are made in the period of time difference between the test and live servers.
