I have upgraded many DotNetNuke websites and it is not usually a major problem after 4.9.5. Usually  the best was to upgrade straight to the latest version to get a minimum of errors. But after 5.3.0, you can’t go all the way to 5.5.1 or 5.6.1. This creates a number of errors. The links to Telrik is the problem. Although I will arrange an error, the result is just new bugs. The only way is to upgrade all versions until I come to the versions I want to.

How is it meant? That you have to upgrade the version every step by step or can you jump to latest version?

In most cases it is possible and recommended to go from 4.09.05 or 5.xx.xx all the way to 5.06.01 in one step. I have upgraded a number of sites recently without issues but ALWAYS make backups of both the file system and database pre-upgrade and if making the upgrade from 4.09.05 or any 5.xx.xx version prior to 5.02.03 ALWAYS clone the site to a localhost installation first and test the backup there.

If you do make upgrades in multiple steps, do NOT upgrade to 5.03.00, 5.04.00 or 5.05.00. Skip past those versions!

Of course, I make a backup of the database and files. Run also backup every night that I can use if it would go completely wrong. It has saved me sometimes, time!

I have never upgraded locally. It is the sql-server that can be difficult to get to work locally. But I'll try it. Problems are easier to solve if you do not have a real website that is disconnected. Thanks for the tip.

Why should you skip those steps? Errors in these versions, I hope will be corrected when you upgrade? Think many might want to upgrade to the latest version when they come and even the versions that you mention. I stopped upgrading at the drop after all the errors with 5.3.0. Now I upgrade only if I am doing extensive work on the website and only to the most recent stable version.
