I have a customer who needs to change their domain name - they want to expunge the old domain name so that it is not visible to the  public. I have added the new domain name in DNN and Plesk as an alias.  When you type in the new domain name it goes to the site, but the url changes to the old domain name (not what we want).

I have asked my host provider if there are IIS changes that can be made so that the url will not change to the old domain name, but I am not getting much help.

Will a url re-writter solve this problem for me? (recommendations?)

Is there a simpler solution?

If you have the ability, upgrade the site to 5.6.1 and then use the new Portal Alias feature to setup a redirect (it's a 301 redirect as I understand it). Once you've upgraded the site, log in and under Admin > Site Settings > Advanced > Portal Settings choose "Redirect" and click update. When the page refreshes, you should now see a drop-down menu in the Portals section that allows you to define the "Default Alias". Set this to the new domain and "update". Leave the old domain in the list so it gets redirected properly. Now, when you visit the old domain, you should see the URL swap to the new domain automatically in the address bar.  You will want to leave it this for a while, as it can take the changes up to 3mos+ for the search engines to properly index the redirect and start clearing the old domain from their records.

Thanks Wells,
I was planning to upgrade to 5.6.1 anyways - this is good news to find a simple solution! I want to avoid a url re writer if I can - there seems to be a lot of upgrade issues associated with them.

A 301 redirect at the DNS level will also accomplish this task for you.
