I have been getting the same  problem, and after a little while the web.config gets too large.  then the site gives a 500 error and I had to restore DB and files to resurrect.  Until now, i will try deleting the "net40.config" and report back after a bit.

I think I would have been Ok to clean the web.config file up but had no idea until I found this forum post.

I'd got same this error, when I deploy my website dnn 6.x on Windows Server 2k8 x64, IIS 7.5 & .Net 4.0.

I'd resolved this problem. You only must delete or rename  file  Net40.config at path :

...\Your Website\Install\Config\Net40.config.

After delete this file. Web.config not update once request and my website run  fast.
