Okay, I give up, I'm asking for help now.  I've been running DNN for about 6 years now, installed it probably a hundred times, currently running about 120 portals spread out across several installs, but this one has me stumped.

I am setting up a new server, Windows Server 2008 R2 (x64), Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Express Edition with Advanced Services (64-bit), and a fresh download of the 5.6.1 Install.  No matter how I configure it, I cannot seem to get past the SQL connection box of the install wizard.  I've compared all of the settings that I could find on other installs that are working fine, but this one doesn't seem to want to work no matter what.

Can someone describe how to get a fresh install with 5.61, using SQL Express?  I've been doing this for years and it has always been so simple, is there something different about the newer versions of DNN?

Perhaps I should try installing an older version and upgrading?

Well, I wiped out the DNN install, downloaded version 5.2 and that installed perfectly. I then tried upgrading to 5.6.1 and that reverted back to the install wizard that would not work again. So, I wiped it all out again, put 5.2 back in, and will upgrade one version at a time until I can get it running good.

  Make sure you are using the correct connection string and not one copied from an old version of DNN.
<add name="SiteSqlServer" connectionString="server=server\servername;Database=MyDB;uid=MyUID;pwd=MyPa$$w0rD;" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />

Firstly - are you selecting the SQL Express File Option or the SQL Connector option during the install process.

The SQL Express option forces DNN to try and use a ms sql mdf file for its database as opposed to a connection to the SQL server itself.

If you are running 2008 R2 and it is configured to tcpip and remote connections you can use the SQL 2005/2008 option instead of the express option.

Sounds like the App pool is not running under NETWORK SERVICE, it defaults to AppPoolId.  make sure the user your App Pool is running under has enough rights on your Sql box.
