I recently moved my website to my production server. Did this by copying my entire DNN-installation and backuping and restoring the database.
I thought all configurations would be the same by that, but somehow I'm not able to make any changes in the portal.css anymore.
DNN says access is denied.

What could be the cause of this, and what can I do about it?

Sounds like you need to check your folder permissions on your production server.

I know, but can I do that from within DotNetNuke? Otherwise I'd have to ask the owner of the production-server.

Anyhow, I only copied the files, why would the portal.css suddenly become unwritable?

I had this happen to me a while ago.  It was an issue with the text Editor I was using.

When I opended the editor program, I had to open it using, "Run as Administrator".

This fixed the issue.

Also, did you copy or move the file.

I believe in Windows:
Copy = Inherit permissions of new folder
vs
Move = Take permissions of original folder with you

There are some details I don't remember, but this could explain why you don't have permissions to this folder.
