Can anyone tell me how to create a date field in the User Registration Page that verifies that a new user is over 17.

When a user is registering for the site, I would like a birthdate entered into a date field. Before the information is commited to the database, I would like to check that the user is 18 or older so to be considered an adult. I was hoping that there would be a regex statement that would work in the new field, but I haven't been able to find any help there at all, so I if there is a way to tweak the vb or something to verify that date I would love to be shown how. If there are more than one way to do it, I would welcome the options.
Thanks for looking Sebastian.
