I've tried looking into the documentation and the forum posts but didn't see any help on this matter.

I am trying to link a Look-Up field to a local file that contains a list of values (such as Countries, Cities, etc.) since we still cannot reference other UDTs.

What is the local file's format? Is it XML based or just a plain TXT file with a list of values?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

you cannot lookup from a local file - Countries etc are stored in the database. You will need to create a custom field type instead.

That didn't really answer my question, Stephan. The link just goes to a blog post back from 2009 with the module's source code and release notes. I need a step by step guide on how to create a custom data type since that seems to be the only option to solve my main issue.
