Can I use a Custom Resource Provider in DNN?

I have a provider that on an ASP.NET site gets all resources from a database. I have tried to implement it on a clean 5.6.1 DNN site but it is ignored. Does DNN not use the ASP.NE localization system?

please be aware, that static localization in DNN using resource files has been created prior to ASP.Net localization (but along the first preview of it) and is implemented differently to fit the multiportal situation.

So does that mean I am stuck with.resx files for localisation in DNN for both the standard DNN resources and any resources my custom modules use?

If so, that is going to be a huge maintenance problem as we manage translations for 20 locales for all our web and PDF output using resources in a database. That way, we can intelligently select the text to send for translation using a comparison of the last modified dates of the base locales and the other locales. This is already an automated workflow for us.
