I have a DNN 4.9.2 source code installation that I want to upgrade to 5.6.1. The installation has many core, third party and custom modules and skins installed. What is the recommended procedure for upgrading?

I have the existing installation version controlled and have a backup of both the site and the database. However, I'd like to create a clean install of 5.6.1 and migrate the database and site content to it. That way I keep the existing installation intact in case I need to go back to it.

If I create a brand new 5.6.1 source installation and connect it to a copy of the 4.9.2 database, will DNN upgrade the DB to 5.6.1 in this scenario? Do I need to make sure that all the modules the existing site uses are installed before connecting the database?

Any ideas or experience appreciated.

Are there any changes directly in DNN core? Any upgrade will overwrite them, so you have to provide more details here.

1. Upgrade all your modules till latest version.
2. Clone your website to test environment
3. Proceed with upgrade typical - with help of upgrade package
