I'm trying to install DNN for the first time, and am having various problems in selecting the correct settings withni the web.config file.
Firstly, putting in the standard lines, ie. just changing the SQL server config, I get the following error:

DotNetNuke Configuration Error

Could not find a part of the path '*****\Config\Backup_2006611037\web_.config'.Could not find a part of the path '*****\Config\Backup_2006611037\SiteUrls.config'.

DotNetNuke has extensive file upload capabilities for content, modules, and skins. These features require custom security settings so that the application is able to create and remove files in your website.

Using Windows Explorer, browse to the root folder of the website ( C:\DotNetNuke by default ). Right-click the folder and select Sharing and Security from the popup menu ( please note that if you are using Windows XP you may need to Enable Simple File Sharing before these options are displayed ). Select the Security tab. Add the appropriate User Account and set the Permissions.

If using Windows 2000 - IIS5
- the {Server}\ASPNET User Account must have Read, Write, and Change Control of the virtual root of your website

If using Windows 2003 - IIS6
- the NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE User Account must have Read, Write, and Change Control of the virtual root of your website

I am assured that the user has the correct access rights, however impersonation is turned on;  I've tried turning on impersonation within the web.config file, however it doesn't recognise the config lines.

please notice, that it is not the user (i.e. your account), that needs write access but the asp.net worker process as described. besides you should consider using a shorter physical path for your portal, you might get into trouble with later installations of providers etc.

Why does it try to access web_.config instead of web.config? Make sure, there are no web.configs in parent folders.

I suggest setting up DotNetNuke as suggested and copying release.config to web.config, alter the connection string, check, that you configured correctly an empty database and try to start up.
