Hi all,

Appreciate your reading my post ! :)

I've gotten the task of troubleshooting a Hosted DNN website that is serving pages but the Login and Register

links don't work and results in a "Module Load Warning"  where the Login user control should display.

Module Load Warning

One or more of the modules on this page did not load. This  may be temporary. Please refresh the page (click F5 in  most browsers). If the problem persists, please let the Site Administrator know.

1. Upgrade

The only idea I've heard is to try and upgrade the site from DNN 4.5.2 to  DNN 4.9.5.

I read that it is recommended to first upgrade to DNN 4.6.2

then update to DNN 4.9.5.

2. Force Use of Default Skin

I'm also thinking of trying to overlay the custom skin in the _default or 0 folder  with the default Min Entropy skin

Right now, I don't have direct database access to try and change DNN tables ...

Thanks for any ideas or solutions.

Regards, Paul

if you have limited access, I'd create a local setup of a copy of the site on your machine to identify the issue.

Hi Sebastian,

Yes, I am trying to setup (unsuccessfully) a  DNN 4.5 website at home. I will create another post with the issues I'm having.

Thanks, Paul

Hi all,

There was another forum post about this problem ( Sorry no link ) that said that by refreshing all of the folders and files in the ADMIN folder

and then tweaking the web.config file with a space would cause the website to rebuild / reload.

I don't know why this would  work ( thinking to myself ).

I ran the WINDIFF file utility with the existing Admin Folder files

and the new 4.6.2 install files and there were "no differences".

I was very skeptical, but in desperation, I FTP'ed all the ADMIN files up to the Hosted site and then  VOILA !

The  error in the NewsFeed Module on the home page was gone.

The Login and Register links were working again.

So, who can explain what happened to make this correct the problems ?

It would seem that a Website reboot causing a rebuild of the code might have done the same thing ?

Their are still some other problems on the site ( to be resolved ) but the main problem with not being able to login is resolved.

Q. Now I'm wondering if I should copy all the rest of the DNN 4.6.2 folders  to the website and see if some of the strange behaviours

will magically repair ? Is their any danger in doing this ?

Paul

please make sure to have all files from the same DNN version, e.g. 4.6.2
for old versions like this, you need to adopt web.config manually with changes, you can read a to do list here: http://www.deutschnetnuke.de/tabid/186/Default.aspx
I suggest uploading all DNN 5.6.2 files, adjust web.config and perform the upgrade.
Once you are on 4.6.2, you may consider a backup and upgrade to 4.9.5 (for security reasons strongly suggested), which will now adjust web.config automatically.
