One more concern - I see in my web.config files that my handlers have a precondition of runtimeVersionv2.0 - i recall seeing concerns about this in 1 year old documentation indicating these needed to be removed... Is this true?

I recall when 3.5 came out you guys put an "Upgrade to 3.5 framework" feature into the host settings menu - is this something we might shortly see in the DotNetNuke core?

Basically, if you want to upgrade DNN to 4.0 you do it using the Application Pool. If you want to upgrade your development projects to 4.0 you need to do it on the project properties screens. After that you should be good to go.

You shouldn't need to make changes to the web.config as far as I recall.

AFAIR there is a merge script for DNN 4 you may run using configuration manager in Host menu.

By switching the application pool to 4.0 does not mean that code compiled for .Net2.0 and 3.5 is not going to run. Backward compatibility is not broken by upgrading the run time to 4.0. You should not be concerned by this at all. One quick way to change web.config for all your other sites is to simply copy what you got in already converted site in VS to these sites. As long as you have .Net2.0 and 3.5 installed on your server, you can live without making any changes to web.config as long as your code is not using anything specific to .Net4.0.
