Hi,

I've just started using DNN (community edition) and I'm really impressed. I'm stuck on two things though:

  1. When I add a new page (logged in as portal admin user) filling in only the page title, it creates it fine and adds it to the menu and I can see it until I log out...then the link on the menu disappears? I've had a look through the permissions etc but I can't see anything that is restricting this page only to the admin user.
  2. More of a general question: is there a good reference diagram explaining how DNN hangs together (the relationship between host portal, child portals etc etc)? As far as I understand it the DNN CE install installs one instance of a dnn site for you to customise and make your own, then if you want to make another site you would install another instance of DNN CE, cusotmise that...etc etc. Is my understanding okay or way wrong?

Many thanks in advance guys,
Gordopolis

Question 1 : Yes, it is a permissions problem you have. After adding a page, go into the page settings by clicking on 'edit' in the control panel. This will load up the page settings.

Find the permissions section and grant permissions to 'all users' 'view' permission for the page, then click on 'update' (at the bottom). This will grant all (anonymous) users the ability to view the page. This will make it appear in the menu.

Question 2 : All portals are stored in a flat structure - there is no hierarchy. Each portal has a row in the 'Portals' table, and each tab belongs to a portal. The difference between a child portal and a parent portal is simply the portal alias, or unique domain/path that identifies the portal.
So you could have 3 portals:
portal1.com
portal2.com
portal1.com/portal3
In this case portal1.com and portal2.com are 'parent' portals, and portal1.com/portal3 is a 'child' portal, simply because the unique path (portal alias) of the portal is a child directory of another portal. Apart from that, there is no relationship between the two. 'Child' portal was perhaps a inaccurate term to use back when the functionality was introduced, 'directory' portal might have been better as it doesn't imply a relationship.

A host portal is just one of the portals (usually 0) which is designated as the host portal. It doesn't have a lot of significance in day-to-day use.

Thanks for the reply - that's question 1 sorted. :)

As for my second question, I'm still a little unclear: I run MS WebMatrix and i can see the instance of DNN CE in 'My Sites'. When I open this I see my site 'site1', with all of my customisations. But if i wanted to have another site 'site 2', what do i have to do? Can I add another site under the existing instance of DNN CE, or do I have to install another instance?

Forgive my thickness - just a few days into playing with DNN.

Thanks,
Gordon

you may create a child site Site1/site2, AFAIK WebMatrix does not provide UI for assigning multiple aliases to the same web site, which you would need to use DNN with multiple parent portals.

Thanks Sebastian.

Instead of WebMatrix, what tool do you use to manage & create DNN websites/portals?

Thanks,
Gordon
