Hi,

We are a large organization that uses DNN to develop portals.
Here is our question:
We will have about 300,000 registered users.
and there will be about 30,000 roles.

Is DNN membership system robust enough to handle this type of scale? i.e. Is the performance going to be an issue?

Thanks,
Roger

Last I heard this dnn website had over a million members and is also driving this large and busy discussion forum without skipping a beat.

Depending on your needs it also scales to web farms and even cloud computing systems ... have a look at what the guys at powerdnn.com offer with regards to very massively scaling options.

Now having said this - the area of roles is one that any system is going to struggle with at 30,000 roles.  Technically it is possible to have a large number of roles - but it you are talking about that number of roles in a single portal then I would suggest maybe you need to look at your architecture.
If on the other hand you are talking about multiple portals with 10-20 roles per portal then this dnn will do all day.

there should be no problem having a few hundred roles (in multiple role groups), AFAIK the number of roles on DotNetNuke.com has far more than hundred roles as well, but 30.000 in a single portal would hardly be manageable without modifications. If your "Roles" are companies or working groups, you should use a different approach, like Groups in Active Social or dedicated profile properties.

Last year, we had similar request - eventually the customer went for a custom solution, but we did suggest building a third party module that can manage the the large number of roles - this does require careful considerations since it has not been done before.

Keep in mind one of the biggest limitations with roles in the current DNN version is the number of roles you can assign to a user. While the framework will assign an unlimited number of roles to a single user account in the database, DNN stores roles in a cookie when the user logs into the site. This cookie has a character limitation which will prevent their account from working (throws an error) if too many roles have been assigned.

Obviously, this may not be an issue depending on your implementation requirements. I also agree with Sebastian that there may be a "better" way to handle this need.
