if you want to run the database in usermode again, you need to detach it from the sql server in SQL Server Management Studio.

Ok, I did that, but am still seeing the Install page when I run the website. Not sure what's going on... web.config is exactly as it was before. Another thing to note is that when I attach the database again, with User Instance = True in web.config, it's not showing it as read-only anymore.

Thanks again for your time.

if you recycle application pool and still get displayed install screen, most likely there is a problem accessing the database.

Hi,

I recycled the application pool and still no luck :o( At a stand still now and don't know what to do. My web.config file is exactly the same as it used to be. I really appreciate you trying to help. Do you have any other thoughts as to what might be going on? The database is not read-only anymore...does that make any sense? If the web.config file is back to how it was with "User Instance=True", shouldn't the database be read-only again?

Thanks,
Jenny

So... you're trying to access the "local" database in \Appdata folder with SQL Express directly?

1. Close all web browsers into the web site
2. Open your "Task Manager" and find w3wp.exe, right click on it and select "End Process"

As long as no w3wp.exe process is running on the machine hosting the site, and where the database is located, you should be able to connect to it and back it up.
If you still have problems then STOP you local IIS as well.
