About Virtual Development Environments - Testing upgrades to V6.

I have about 10 serious clients all of whom rely on their DNN website.

With DNN 6 and 6.1 due very shortly I am worrying a little that I do not have means to test  upgrades apart from a couple of generic local host sites.
I really need a method to test against an actual full clone of a given site.

Conceptually I understand that most developers use virtual desktop environments and this seems to me to be the way to go but have no direct experience of how or with what software.
It occurs to me that perhaps others are in this position too.

My questions are:
 > Is the best way to test a site / maintain this sites test environment for the future and if so;
 > What is the best software to use?

 I have had a google around and looked at lots of the VM ware site and while this has helped I could still do with getting a bit of feedback form real world DNN users.

 Thanks

 Ian

A VM is nice, but it isn't needed. If you only have one machine, just back up and restore the contents of the web root, and the SQL database to a new location. Then set up IIS to point to the new location, and change the web.config to point to the new database (all of which are clones), then upgrade the restored copies. Just make sure you have some alias in the new site like test.company.com, so it will answer. I usually upgrade this way, and if the first test goes well, I just bring down production, and make the test site production.

Hi Patrick

Thank you for your answer.
I often do already do as you suggest for full upgrades.  Your solution is good too as it means that any testing is always on the latest state of the site.
I was also thinking that having a few key sites as VM's would help with minor updates and other tweaks.
I suppose this comes down to a time/benefit judgement.

Cheers

Ian
