I was able to figure this out and am happy to share the fix.
Issue - upgrade from 5.6.2 - 5.6.3 and then 6 caused navigation to 'disappear' when the user hit the back button.

TO FIX:

1. Please make sure the provider - In your skin please ensure that the provider for dnn;nav is set to DDRMenuNavigationProvider
sample: 2. The DDRMenu that ships with DNN 6 needs to be upgraded. Navigate to http://dnnddrmenu.codeplex.com/releases/63831/download/260127 and install this new extension.

The menu should now persist even when the user hits the back button. Hope this helps someone.

I can confirm this as well. Glad to see I'm not the only one experiencing this.

Browsers tested were IE9, Chrome 12 and FF5.
In my testing it only happens in FF5.

Besides the nav menu disappearing using the forward and back buttons, the refresh button produces the same results.

To rule out the possibility of any third party modules or skins causing the issue I installed a fresh copy of DNN 5.6.3.
With all default settings and no third party modules or skins installed the issue IS present.

Looks like a patch is necessary. I hope someone can come up with a workaround in the meantime.

Oh yeah. DNN6 has the sane bug.

Same Problem!  I can confirm that it only happens in Firefox (3, 4, and 5).

Are there any solutions other than DDR Menu?  And why only Firefox?

Need a fix

I posted a bug report in DotNetNuke's Issue Tracker. I would advise everyone to direct any additional findings there to help the person assigned find a resolution for us.
