Can a PHP script be used within DotNetNuke as a "module"? Either DNN5 or DNN6.

no, i'm afraid not- there was a short lived project called nuklet (http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Resources/Forums/forumid/1/threadid/16544/scope/posts.aspx) that's disappeared now, I guess from lack of interest. Some people consume php scripts via the iframe module , or else via httpwebrequests (or via a module such as webharpoon that simplifies that - http://www.landango.com/WebHarpoon/tabid/73/Default.aspx)
