I am at a client's site, and at one point in time they had DNN installed and running, along with some custom plugins (Ealo). They want me to get DNN up and running again, connected to the existing database.

I installed DNN using the same name as the previous install (I think) and updated the Web.config with the correct connectionstring settings to point it to the old DB. When I access the website however, it start to show me the configuration screens. That doesn't sound right, and I don't want it to wipe out the old data (I did make a back, just in case). What am I doing wrong? Can this not be done?

You really need the old site's web.config to be able to use that database (It covers some app settings the site may have had, the machine key for encryption, etc.). You should also upgrade the original site, not start a new one, otherwise you are going to face big issues you won't understand why they are happening (missing modules not on disk, database not updated to proper version, etc.). .

Hi Todd,

Did you resolve this issue? I am having the same issue. I am setting up DNN 6 site by pointing to the existing database. I am joining the new team and need to setup site in my machine by bringing the common database to me local SQL Server 2008.

Please help.

Thanks,
Keshab

If you are setting up new DNN, You should be able to use a blank SQL Server database.
You need either specify name and credentials during setup or edit both uncommented connection strings in Web.Config file manually

I have a similar situation. Our parent company used to control our website and recently handed over control to us. I have the complete zipped directory of the website and a backup of the database. I've configure IIS and I can get to an "unavailable page" or I can run the install wizard. I don't want to nuke the database but rather simply run the existing site on our new servers...

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
