I am about to start to process of upgrading our site from DNN 4.9.1.
I've read a lot of articles within these forums but would like a little extra information before I take the plunge.

I understand already that it's best to upgrade in stages, ie. 4.9.1 > 4.9.5 > 5.2.3 > 5.4.4 > 5.5.1 > 5.6.x
I've read your wiki upgrade instructions page, but really lack technical knowledge regarding restore backups, IIS, setting permissions etc.

I'm going to follow the instructions on this page: http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Resources/Wiki/page/Upgrading-DotNetNuke.aspx

#6?
How do I restore the backed up files to a folder on my web server? I've done many manual backups on our local computer and our web host does daily backups.

#7?
I understand that a subdomain will need to be setup within our web hosting control panel - any general pointers would be appreciated.

#8?
Set up permissions? Do I just need to make sure all folders in our filing system have read/write/execute/delete permissions?

#9?
I can manually backup our current database by exporting it into a zipped file in our root folder, is this what is meant? Otherwise how do I duplicate the existing database?

#10
Where and what in the web.config file do I need to change to point to the new database?

#13
Does this mean carefully finding and replacing each folder and/or file with what is currently there?

Apologies for all the questions, but any help would really be appreciated.

It may also be helpful to know that we use Mac computers and don't have access to Windows Server applications.

Is there a simpler method that doesn't involve duplicating entire websites. Could I simply backup everything, then replace the core files from the downloaded upgrade package?
