Hi Folks,

Is there an example, tutorial or documentation on how to set up a database in DNN 5.6.3 that is in addition to the standard DNN database? I had a module that I used in DNN 4.9.5 that accessed a separate database using the DAL and some additional web.config entries. As I recall I got them out of some really old documentation. It doesn’t work in DNN 5.6.3.

I did try a separate section name and <providers> element entries which got around one problem but I keep getting a null reference. I obviously don’t understand some relationships with the web.config XML and the data provider code in DataProvider.vb and SqlDataProvider.vb.

Any advice or help would be appreciated. An example would be even better.  BTW, if version 6 handles this better I can move to that.

Thanks,
G. M.

If its a custom module - you could be better off bypassing the DAL and handling the access to the second database using LINQSQL

OK thanks Wes, I’ll check out LINQSQL but I think I am really close with my DAL implementation. If there is a DNN 5.x compatible module out there somewhere that uses DAL to do this sort of thing I’ll bet it wouldn’t take me long to fix this. I am almost positive it has to do with my web.config setup. Also note I am using MS GridView. I don’t know if LINQSQL is compatible with that but my DAL implementation is or I should say was.
