I wonder if I was mistaken yesterday.  I tried the w3c validator and got the same result as Gilles.

View source in IE8 shows the incomplete tag.
View source in Chrome does not show a closing html tag at all

I wonder if the w3c validator was really choking on the other meaning in the message "unexpected end of file"

Best wishes,

I just looked at the stream with fiddler.  It's DEFINITELY reporting as being gzip encoded, and I have seen a variety of missing pieces at the end.  As the tag is clearly in the default.aspx page, I think we need to either blame or discount the gzip compression.

I suggest you should get a copy of fiddler (https://www.fiddler2.com).  Keep tweaking settings on the site (DNN, Pageblaster, IIS) until you can get back to an un-gzipped stream.  If there is still a problem then post your findings here and I'm sure we'll try and help some more.  If there isn't a problem then it's in one of the compression engines.

Hi Rod,

Try to disable gzip compression at the host settings level, then if you still encounter the same problem try to disable gzip in the PageBlaster settings.

 Fixed!

Thanks Gilles.  I re-read your advice, and noticed that you also mentioned that PageBlaster uses gzip as well.  I updated off the PageBlaster compression to use deflate instead of gzip and my <html> tag is back!

I modified the following line in the file "Snapsis.PageBlaster.config"

From :

compression-algorithm="gzip"

To :

compression-algorithm="deflate"

and all OK.

I didn't realize that PageBlaster also compresses the page. I guess I can turn on the gzip on DNN now?

Thanks for everyone who helped on this.
Rod.

gzip can be problematic is all its forms - I would leave it off for DNN and PAGEBLASTER - as well as any whitespace filters.

This saga has brought to light many things that irk me about DNN. Specifically...

1. DNN's default performance is slow, so 3rd party products like PageBlaster are required.
2. 3rd party products will often stop working with an upgraded DNN version (expected really).
3. So much of DNN's configuration relies on modifying code of some sort, hacking config files, scripts, or other developer-related tasks. I wish module developers would just program all config settings into a user interface. This is 2011!
4. Diagnosing issues takes a high level of developer knowledge and much research time on forums, blogs and the like
5. DNN tooltips for settings are just repetitions of the label - totally useless, and documentation is sparse and developer oriented.
6. It seems that DNN has so many configuration options that are widely recommended not to use (GZip, whitespace, memory caching etc, etc). Makes me wonder if it's time to cull some of them...

Overall I believe that if you're not prepared to immerse yourself in CSS, HTML, script, JQuery, FTP, IIS and others, DNN is going to fight you every step of the way.

However, the community behind DNN is great, and at the end of the day, the community makes DNN workable, so thanks everyone.

Rod
