Does anyone know of an easy way to populate custom profile properties that have been created?

I don't want to require the fields for registration, but I'd like to be able to fill them in when needed.

It would be nice if this was an option on the user edit screen to be able to enter values for their profile properties.

Hi Leisenstein: If I understand the question correctly, the user should be able to fill in those custom fields by clicking on user account->Edit profile->manage profile. AFAIK the fields available on the registration screen are hard-coded to what you see today. The custom fields won't show here, but they will on the Edit Profile screen.

You can control if they show up for Manage Profile by "visibility"  (Visible check-box on Manage Profile Properties).  Users get there by clicking on their name once logged in...  You can get there thru user accounts...

You can control whether they are required for registration by the Required checkbox

If you want to 'require' a field that wasn't required before, change it and all users with blanks in that field will be prompted for the newly required field on next login. [they get directed automatically to Manage Profile and a big red arrow...]  I sometimes add a custom field like "DataIsCorrect?" and then require it to force users to LOOK at their profile and check the box...

Hope this helps...

BTW...

Beware of deleting any of the default (out-of-the-box) Profile items...  Make them invisible instead...  Modules may NEED or expect a field in a table and misbehave if it's missing.  FORUMS is (was) one of those that many people lost hair over...
