I am certain this has been done before.  In fact, from a technical perspective, there's usually nothing different that a module developer has to do in order to play/access files from a secure folder.  The difference is that a module developer will need to be aware of how to gracefully degrade the user experience if the file is not successfully retrieved.  However, the actual behavior of playing the secure file is no different.
