Ladies and Gents,

I haven't kept up on the "community edition" evolution but I realize it doesn't have all the features of the professional edition, etc.  While I do some more research, I'm simply wondering if I upgrade my two 4.9.5 sites to DNN5 or 6 "community edition," will I be going backwards in functionality in any way?

I use ActiveForums right now, I assume I will be able to still run those in the community edition, is this right?

I know my many custom modules will probably need an overhaul as well as the third party modules previously purchased.

Is there any downside to upgrading to the "community edition" being that I have many custom modules that will need to be maintained?  Thanks much for the help.

Just quickly looking at the version differences, it appears that "granular permissions" is not supported in the new CE.  Is this the same as the "role based" editing that has been standard?  Is this a step backward in the community edition?

Also, "module/page caching" is not in the CE.  Is this a step backward?

I'm too poor for anything other than the community version

6.0 is a significant improvement over 4.9.5 in a myriad of ways - though as posted in other threads - I would possibly suggest waiting till 6.0.1 to get production sites totally functional.

Many modules port forward to 6 with no need for changes - DNN over the years has worked hard to keep the api backwards compatible.  But naturally, depending on your individual modules your mileage may vary - though in many cases you may only be looking at a couple of lines of code change here or there.

With regard to things like role management and caching - none of the features you are using in 4.9.5 have been removed - the Professional Edition extends the original core features by adding additional functionality.

Thanks Westa, that's great news. I think we're going to plan then to upgrade one of our sites to DNN5 after we do some research on the third party modules we use and get a plan together for our dozens of custom modules so we can fix what breaks. Then we'll do the other site.

Great to know that upgrading will keep all the old features and offer enhancements. Looking forward to it after several upgrades over a decade of using DNN.

To be clear: all editions of DNN use the same core framework, Professional and Enterprise add extra functionality by providing additional or eextended modules and providers.
