So, more fun and games. Sorry but I just can't see how anyone can claim this is "easy"....
Another 1 1/2 hours looking at this. This thread has indicated numerous times that I just need to navigate to
http://localhost. That never worked for me (what looked like DNS errors, which still seems strange to me) but I didn't stumble across a page that suggested I try
http://localhost/install/install.aspx.... That worked (kinda - see below). Why is that not written anywhere obvious? Sorry but the instructions for this are all over the place - lots of "don't worry about doing this stuff", "oh, just navigate to http://localhost", etc. No "simple" instructions - just a few posts that keep stating how incredibly easy this is! (basically take backups and then copy a bunch of files).
Anyway, the first time I ran the URL above I received an error that some \install\cleanup file didn't have the right permissions. That was really strange because I know I had given full permissions to NETWORK SERVICE. But, whatever, I can set the permissions to that file manually I thought. But the failed upgrade had got my database into some weird state and wouldn't re-run without me restoring the database first.
So, I did just that and re-ran the URL above. FINALLY it worked! The upgrade (via the browser) ran without errors. What relief! I selected the link at the end of the instructions - and received the following error! I can't get to any page on my site due to the error below. Note again that the upgrade ran without any errors whatsoever. No idea why it refers to 5.6.1.0
Method 'RestoreUser' in type 'DotNetNuke.Security.Membership.AspNetMembershipProvider' from assembly 'DotNetNuke.Provider.AspNetProvider, Version=5.6.1.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=null' does not have an implementation.
Come on guys - despite frequent claims that this is really easy - it is not. I have no idea what's up with this but I maintain that a simply upgrade utiluty - to check for dependencies, permissions, versions and then to run the upgrader and verify success - would be a major step forward and what "professional" software should do (yes, I paid for Professional). Having to do all this manual stuff is a royal pain.
Sorry for my angst - but I am immensely frustrated. Please don't tell me it's really easy again :(
