Thank you, Westa. I regret that this has become a pretty sorry story and I am still not upgraded. I have followed the steps to the letter and every time I get the same DNS error - which is totally mystifying to me. I believe I am copying the files in correctly (I get prompted to confirm overwriting of existing files, including in subdirectories). I am also granting full control to NETWORK SERVICE in the web directory and all subdirectories.

To recap, all works well with an existing site but as soon as I copy the extracted DNN Professional Upgrade into the folder I receive an error when accessing localhost.

I still think this is evidence that the upgrade can be made a lot easier. This "very simple" upgrade is nine steps long, includes locating the account used for the app pool (!), setting permissions on files and subfolders and so on. In my case I am sure I am making some dumb error (even though I have check this step by step numerous times).

A utility would save me from all this. While I haven't been working on this full time (20 mins there, 30 mins, etc) I first attempted the upgrade on Saturday and I'm still not done.

Thanks again.

Mark

So, more fun and games. Sorry but I just can't see how anyone can claim this is "easy"....

Another 1 1/2 hours looking at this. This thread has indicated numerous times that I just need to navigate to http://localhost. That never worked for me (what looked like DNS errors, which still seems strange to me) but I didn't stumble across a page that suggested I try http://localhost/install/install.aspx.... That worked (kinda - see below). Why is that not written anywhere obvious? Sorry but the instructions for this are all over the place - lots of "don't worry about doing this stuff", "oh, just navigate to http://localhost", etc. No "simple" instructions - just a few posts that keep stating how incredibly easy this is! (basically take backups and then copy a bunch of files).

Anyway, the first time I ran the URL above I received an error that some \install\cleanup file didn't have the right permissions. That was really strange because I know I had given full permissions to NETWORK SERVICE. But, whatever, I can set the permissions to that file manually I thought. But the failed upgrade had got my database into some weird state and wouldn't re-run without me restoring the database first.

So, I did just that and re-ran the URL above. FINALLY it worked! The upgrade (via the browser) ran without errors. What relief! I selected the link at the end of the instructions - and received the following error! I can't get to any page on my site due to the error below. Note again that the upgrade ran without any errors whatsoever. No idea why it refers to 5.6.1.0

Method 'RestoreUser' in type 'DotNetNuke.Security.Membership.AspNetMembershipProvider' from assembly 'DotNetNuke.Provider.AspNetProvider, Version=5.6.1.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=null' does not have an implementation.

Come on guys - despite frequent claims that this is really easy - it is not. I have no idea what's up with this but I maintain that a simply upgrade utiluty - to check for dependencies, permissions, versions and then to run the upgrader and verify success  - would be a major step forward and what "professional" software should do (yes, I paid for Professional). Having to do all this manual stuff is a royal pain.

Sorry for my angst - but I am immensely frustrated. Please don't tell me it's really easy again :(

Mark, it's not easy, not at all. I've never had so many issues trying to do an 'easy' upgrade before. I don't even have that complicated of a site and I get a different flipping error every time I hit refresh. Starting to think I'm going to have to settle with 5.6.2 since that's the only version I can get working.

Wish I could provide some assistance for you, but I fear I'm more irritated and confused than yourself.

An unhandled error has occurred.

3 sites upgraded from latest version to 6.0 are down... :) This is like the good old days of 4.x.

In the last year, I haven't had any upgrade issues. So much for that.

Mark,
If you paid for Professional, then please by all means enter a trouble ticket and we would be happy to get on a GotoMeeting and walk you through resolving the issue.  It really shouldn't take more than a few minutes (even with explanations).
