The buttons at the top of the forums dissappeared on my install(moderate, settings, search, home, etc)
They are now only shown in the management panel when logged in.  I need these to show for all users the way they do here.

Forum version 05.00.03 should address this (it was included with 6). I ran into that very same issue here and corrected it. Also, an FYI, I have a version 05.00.04 now that is built for 6 with some UI updates so it looks better in 6 (also installed here). I have a few more tweaks to make before releasing it, but its no different than running 5.0.3 besides the UI changes (and dnn will still think it is 503 too).

I just installed the latest forum alpha.. I cannot find a way into the forum admin interface. I am logged in as host but yet the forum seems to think i am just a regular user. I can access the module settings but not the forum admin CP...

How can I fix this?

There is a 'bug' where when you first place the module on a page the admin and host items don't show. You can restart the site and it will correct itself (this only happens the first time the module is placed on a page). This sounds like it might be that issue.
